When I went looking, I quickly discovered that my idea of 'far' needed some calibration.

Starting out, I didn't think that Bujold's Vorkoverse was 'far future' even though it's 2900-3100 CE. As you so clearly pointed out, recent offerings focus on a 100 to 300 year envelope and seldom go further than 400 to 500 years beyond the present.

As a wanna-be writer myself, a couple more hypothetical contributing factors come to mind. At the top of the list is any corporation's reluctance to risk getting involved in a venture that strays away from proven trends.

Picking a time to start my story lines is becoming quite an exercise in and of it's self. At the moment I am thinking about 700 Million or so years in the future when the luminosity of the sun is 7 percent higher than it is now.

I really like the things you had to say about how the sci-fi and fantasy genres cross over. I am too much into the Engineering subset you mentioned to be comfy with sliding that far over the line into fantasy so I feel a stronger desire to set it further into the future than other storyteller's might.

Thanks again for sharing your thoughts
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2323383105577553414.post-56673385048263095132017-09-23T08:52:32.388-07:002017-09-23T08:52:32.388-07:00Thanks for the recommendations! Thanks for the recommendations!Ethanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13490888839784651097noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2323383105577553414.post-64341207453502732792017-09-22T04:56:15.279-07:002017-09-22T04:56:15.279-07:00I consider the fantastic Takeshi Kovacs novels to ...I consider the fantastic Takeshi Kovacs novels to be far future, and my near future (2137) novel came about by wondering what some tech I saw in those books would have been like in its infancy.Ted Crosshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09022309459554237650noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2323383105577553414.post-84406043747981195222017-09-17T17:51:05.191-07:002017-09-17T17:51:05.191-07:00This post was mentioned on File 770, where it rece...This post was mentioned on File 770, where it received some mostly critical, but worthwhile comments: http://file770.com/?p=37771Ethanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13490888839784651097noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2323383105577553414.post-30510625604338948302017-09-17T12:49:51.146-07:002017-09-17T12:49:51.146-07:00Will do!
