| Reading this on my porch on Easter Sunday seemed weirdly appropriate |
I have an abiding love of the Hellraiser movies (well, most of them) that I've never been able to explain, and I've read a fair bit of Barker's stuff over the years (including most of the stuff with Harry D'Amour and the movie Lord of Illusions, although it's been a few decades). I've been excited about The Scarlet Gospels since it was released several years ago, but somehow didn't read it until now.
I gave a talk (on Zoom) on April 8, 2021 as part of a Living Philosophically series for my academic department at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. I was thinking of a cute title for this post, and my first idea was that a Stephen King short story could be called a "little King." A collection of them should have a catchy collective name, and "murder" (as a "murder" of crows) was too good to pass up. Anyway, here's the review....
March is Women's History Month, and like I did in 2019, I decided to celebrate by reading and reviewing works written by women this month. I'm reviewing the 1974 science fantasy novel Ginger Star by Leigh Brackett, the 2010 modern classic on mass incarceration The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander, the 2020 creepy haunted house tale Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, and--bookending the post with 70's SF--the 1975 strange little novella The New Atlantis by Ursula K. Le Guin.
I may try to keep up with my themed month reviews that I started in February for Black History Month. So stay tuned in May for Asian Pacific American Heritage Month!
My too-long running Pandemic Journal continues, with Part 19! As a Dark Tower fan, I would be remiss if I didn't note the number 19. Ka works and the world moves on. Hopefully to a post-pandemic future at some point. But not yet.
I broke my arm in January, so see if you can tell as you go on when my arm started hurting less and typing became easier...

Today is the anniversary of the day when the COVID-19 pandemic was declared. Here's an entry from my pandemic journal on the topic. I'll keep posting that journal, but I thought excerpting this entry would be a good way to commemorate our pandemi-versary.

My previous entry in my Random Thoughts series was in November 2020, so with this post my Random Thoughts series rolls into 2021! There are still plenty of random thoughts to be had in this new and strange year. I've got stuff on philosophy (of course), but also recipes, medical stuff, Taco Bell, conspiracy theories, and Coming to America.
And as I started doing in 2020, I'll include some recent memes that amused me just to keep things more random.
